Inspects various phases of a variety of construction projects, other than buildings, to assure compliance with plans, specifications and agreements of the work; authorizes deviations from plans and specifications during construction; and performs other related duties as required.

Current vacancies:
Position may involve occasional exposure to construction and traffic hazards, sewage gases, sewer treatment chemicals, paint fumes, noise, electrical hazards, and moving equipment.  Some physical dexterity required to perform on-site field inspections and investigations which include: climbing ladders, descending into trenches, tanks and manholes, crawling through pipes; carrying sampling, measuring, and testing equipment; walking on uneven or obstructed surfaces.  If not provided City vehicle, employee required to provide personal vehicle for regular job transportation and be compensated at union contract rate.  The use of protective equipment may be required due to possible exposure to toxic/noxious fumes and substances.  Safety practices and procedures are used.

There are four (4) vacancies with the Department of Planning and Permitting, Site Development Division.  Regular hours anticipated, but may be required to work shifts, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate unusual problems or workload and construction schedules.  Minimum Qualification Requirements:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.  Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may substitute for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
TWO (2) years of experience in inspecting or supervising construction work.
 
Desirable Experience: Infrastructure construction experience.
 

Examples of Qualifying Experience:
Inspectors, superintendents, trades supervisors, working trade supervisors, etc. with experience of such scope, level and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Substitution:
Any one of the following will substitute for the required experience:
  1. An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from an accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic programs from an accredited college or university.
     
  2. A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: 
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license.
