Plans, coordinates, and supervises through subordinate supervisors, a city-wide planned nursery and landscape, grounds improvement, and/or street/park tree maintenance program; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Park Maintenance and Recreation Services.  Position is required to serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies and may work overtime on weekends and holidays.  List may be used to fill future vacancies in this and/or other departments.

 Minimum Qualification Requirements:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture or a related field.

Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three years of supervisory experience involving responsibility for a program overseeing the:  1)  propagation and cultivation of various plants, shrubs, and trees; and/or 2)  care, maintenance and beautification activities for parks, gardens, streets, malls or other landscaped areas.

Such experience must have shown demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of horticulture and arboriculture; propagation and cultivation methods and techniques; methods and techniques of re-sodding and re-building large fields; techniques of plant, tree and shrubbery arrangements; basic principles and methods of eradicating and controlling plant pests and diseases; grounds maintenance tools and equipment; budget preparation; principles and practices of supervision; report writing; and the ability to plan, direct and coordinate the work of a large group of employees; plan and establish a grounds improvement program for parks, playgrounds and other landscaped areas; make projections and estimates of materials, equipment and personnel needed for grounds improvement work; prepare reports; issue clear and concise oral and written instructions; develop and implement training programs; and deal effectively with subordinates and others.

License Requirement:
Appropriate valid driver's license.  The current vacancy requires a valid driver's license (automobile), prior to appointment.

Special Requirement: Certification as a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture, as required.
