Supervises and participates in inspecting a wide variety of construction projects, other than buildings, to assure compliance with plans, specifications, and agreements of the work; and performs other related duties as required.

Vacancies are with the Department of Design and Construction, Civil Division. These positions are responsible for providing independent daily oversight and inspection of the City's Capital Improvement projects including, but not limited to, roadways, bridges, drainage, flood control, rockfall mitigation, guardrails, and ADA improvements, in accordance with the contract documents, plans, Standard Details and Specifications, General Terms and Conditions, as well as established policies and procedures. Work may involve occasional exposure to construction and traffic hazards, sewage gases, sewer treatment chemicals, paint fumes, noise, electrical hazards, and moving equipment. Some physical dexterity required to perform on-site field inspections and investigations which include: climbing ladders, descending into trenches, tanks and manholes, crawling through pipes; carrying sampling, measuring, and testing equipment; walking on uneven or obstructed surfaces. If not provided City vehicle, employee required to provide personal vehicle for regular job transportation and be compensated at union contract rate. The use of protective equipment may be required due to possible exposure to toxic/noxious fumes and substances. Safety practices and procedures are used.

 Minimum Qualification Requirements:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience that demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of experience in inspecting or supervising construction work.
 

Experience Substitution:
Any one of the following will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience:

  1. An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from an accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic programs from an accredited college or university.
     
  2. One year of general education requirement courses plus the following courses from Honolulu Community College: AEC80 Basic Drafting, AEC118 Construction Materials, BLPR22 Blueprint Reading, and ICS100 Computer Literacy and Applications (or similar courses from an accredited college or university), with grade of C or better.

Any one of the following will substitute for all of the required experience:

  1. Three years of engineering courses from an accredited college or university.
     
  2. A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
