SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the overall management of the designated area’s biomedical team, including overseeing facility projects, the designated area’s biomedical costs, quality and employees and support for clinical services and facilities. Performs repairs and operates biomedical equipment.


The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

Equipment Maintenance, Repair, Upgrades and Operation

  • Maintain hands-on proficiency to be able to step into the role of a Biomedical Technician in case of emergency and to be able to expertly assess technicians for their annual skills checklist.
  • Serve as a back-up for Biomedical Technicians and assist with completion of work when necessary.

Biomedical Technician Duties included:

  • Repair and maintain, with support documentation, dialysis systems, R.O. water systems and ancillary medical equipment as recommended by the equipment manufacturer’s specifications and/or company policies and procedures, as applicable. Responsible for routine and emergency equipment repair and records maintenance on all hemodialysis related equipment
  • Performs safety checks, determines % rejection and sends water analysis on RO water treatment systems
  • Implements all operational procedures for all hemodialysis equipment, including all disinfection procedures
  • Assist clinical personnel in troubleshooting equipment related problems
  • Perform electrical safety assurance and performance testing on all dialysis machines and related electrical equipment as required by equipment manufacturers and/or company policies and procedures, as applicable
  • Reviews daily water checks on R.O. system and log sheet for completeness and accuracy, noting any deviations from normal
  • Upgrade R.O. water treatment systems to company standards as needed, under the direction of the Area Technical Manager (ATM)
  • Disinfects water treatment systems and cultures each system to ensure proper standard is met.
  • Trained in the preparation of “dry acid” and “bicarbonate” dialysate
  • Repair all equipment with proper parts, while conserving cost in equipment
  • Is able to respond quickly and efficiently to any situation that occurs (i.e. leading plumbing, light bulb changes, overflowing sink, etc.) as requested
  • Follow up and resolve abnormal culture results with the Clinic Manager and/or Director of Technical Services as applicable.

Quality, Compliance and Risk Accountability

  • Ensure compliance with company policy and procedures as well as state and federal regulations (CMS, OSHA or other government agencies) in accordance with all requirements for patient care and services
  • Participate as needed in on-site inspections by state or federal surveyors
  • Understand and apply company policy and procedures to clinical employees’ operation of dialysis machines, water treatment systems and ancillary medical equipment and when troubleshooting or assisting biomedical activities
  • Complete the required internal audits for each facility assigned to the ATM.
  • Review internal audits and ensure appropriate follow up for any deficiencies.
  • Visit each facility in the assigned area at least once each quarter to assess and evaluate technical activities and to ensure Biomedical Technicians’ compliance with policies and procedures
  • Maintain an effective system of biomedical quality and compliance records and facility reports
  • Upon request, assist the Clinic Manager in performing building safety inspections to help assure compliance with applicable federal, state, local laws and regulations
  • Participate as requested, as a member of each facility’s QAPI meetings, in person, by phone or through substitution by another qualified biomedical technician

Financial Management

· Manage equipment and labor costs and maintain an effective system of biomedical financial and business records and facility reports.

· Review and/or approve purchases of maintenance and repair part, tools, test equipment and capital equipment as assigned by the Director of Technical Services.

· Ensure optimal biomedical staffing plans are developed and used throughout the area and promote the most efficient utilization of biomedical employees in collaboration with Clinic Managers and Director of Technical Services.

· Use or implement reports and tools to help ensure biomedical-related budgets are achieved

· Review and approve time cards and make corrections for all bio-med direct reports for payroll by required deadline each pay period

· Review and approve expenses and mileage claims in Concur for all bio-med direct reports, ensuring accuracy, appropriateness and correct charges to appropriate facilities. Ensure all expense/mileage submissions meet the requirements of the related policies.

· Minimize and optimize the use of overtime by biomedical employees. Ensure the most accurate, appropriate charge of overtime to the facility that incurred the charge in accordance with guidelines and procedures

· Develop optimal on-call coverage procedures and schedules to demonstrate both stewardship and concern for biomedical technicians quality of life issues

Employee Management

  • Manage all employment areas such as hiring, promoting, job performance evaluations, professional development, employee satisfaction and disciplinary actions with appropriate approval from the Director of Technical Services and/or Human Resources Manager
    • Manage employee relations issues timely and appropriately
    • Maintain employee records and personnel file to include written performance evaluation of all employees in compliance with company policy and any applicable laws
    • Evaluate, record and process employee compensation according to company policy
    • Know, understand, implement, follow and communicate to employees all company employment policies and procedures and other opportunities within the company and foster a positive work environment
    • Ensure all employment processes are completed timely and in compliance with company policy and any applicable laws, including, but not limited to Personnel Change Forms, terminations, New Hire forms, etc.
    • Facilitate employee development; collaborate with direct reports to create professional development goals
    • Maintain familiarity with and communicate to employees company programs impacting employees (including but not limited to Employee Referral Bonus, Tuition Assistance, etc.)
  • Know, understand, and follow basic wage and hour laws, federal, state and local laws and regulations, including payment of all time worked by employees, Medicare and legislation affecting employment in dialysis and nursing services
  • Create and foster an environment of trust and effective, open communication within the technical operations and with clinical teams to interpret technical policies and procedures, and to create clarity, and to generate options and solutions
  • Serve as a technical, professional resource to all area dialysis facilities to provide in-service and activities related to technical services, proactively meeting and anticipating needs
  • Ensure Annual Skills Checklists are completed for each Biomedical Technician as required
  • Deploy and ensure timely completion of educational programs including:
    • Initial orientation for Biomedical Technicians to the facilities and to company policies and procedures
    • Technical and other Biomedical training for technicians

Biomedical Technician responsibilities included:

  • Complete annual skills competency checklist as required
  • Maintain current knowledge of company policies and procedures including changes in operating dialysis, water treatment and ancillary medical equipment; teach to other clinical and biomedical employees as necessary
  • Provide training to clinical employees on taking of water cultures to ensure water quality meets Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) microbiological standards
  • Assist the Clinic Managers in providing instruction to clinical employees on the proper operation and utilization of dialysis equipment and systems, focusing on equipment start-up, shut-down and emergency situations
  • Perform ongoing training to clinical employees on the water system including guidelines on the emergency procedures in the event of water system failure

Leadership for Initiatives, Processes, Technology and Equipment

  • Implement changes in company policies, procedures, vendors and products as directed
  • Provide support in the design and construction of new units, unit expansions, renovations and projects. Coordinate the ordering of dialysis equipment and biomedical activities necessary to obtain licensure and federal certification
  • Perform biomedical-related due diligences for potential acquisitions
  • Perform baseline facility quality assessment audits of new or newly acquired facilities, as needed
  • Participate with the Director of Technical Services, Director of Operations and/or SVP of Operations in development of plans and scheduling of biomedical employees for timely and effective deployment to support dialysis facilities in the event of a disaster or emergency
  • Other special projects as assigned
  • Work in multiple facilities and travel to cover multiple facilities or to attend meetings as needed
  • On request, assist the Clinic Manager in evaluating the need for facility repairs and maintenance to be performed by a qualified resource

Other duties as assigned

  • Provide on-call coverage on nights and weekends as required
  • Work in multiple facilities and travel to cover multiple facilities or to attend meetings as needed; ability to travel up to 75% of time
  • On request, assist the Clinic Manager in evaluating the need for facility repairs and maintenance to be performed by a qualified resource
  • Consistent, regular, punctual attendance as scheduled is an essential responsibility of this position
  • Identify confidential information and maintain strict confidentiality of information


Supervises Biomedical Technicians within assigned area, including the hiring promotion, discipline, professional development and discharge of employees as needed with approval from the Director of Technical Services and, if applicable, the Human Resources Manager or Senior Vice-President of Operations.

· High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate Degree in Electronics preferred

· Minimum of 3 years experience providing repair and maintenance service to dialysis facilities required

· Two years experience supervising biomedical teams preferred

· Basic computer skills and proficiency required in MS Outlook; proficiency in all required computer systems of the company within 90 days of hire.

· Must complete Water Treatment System training program prior to completing water treatment system tasks independently


· Must meet all applicable state requirements for education, training and competency in the state in which they

are employed, if applicable

· Manufacturers’ certification for equipment that is predominantly used in the area strongly recommended (dialysis machines and facility water systems)

· Valid driver’s license in state of employment; driving record must meet insurance liability requirements if operating a company vehicle

· Must carry personal car insurance with a minimum combined single limit of $100,000 per accident or per state of employment’s requirement

The physical requirements can vary. In general, the position requires the following activities:

· Ability to lift minimum of 35 lbs. to a maximum of 50 lbs. unassisted
