This position is located in the Kalaupapa Settlement in Kalawao County, on the Island of Molokai.
Kalaupapa is a small peninsula on the north shore of Molokai. It is a severely isolated community surrounded by the ocean on three sides and 2,000 foot cliffs on the fourth side. Access into the Settlement is by a small 5-8 passenger commuter airplane; or on foot or mule down a 26-switchback trail down the sea cliffs. Ocean access is limited to only a few months in the summer when the sea is calm enough to allow boats to dock.
Kalaupapa is a closed community. By law, only persons authorized by the State may enter the Settlement, and minors are not allowed. This means, no one can live in the Settlement unless they are employed by the Settlement, the State or Federal Government, or if they are an official volunteer in the Settlement.
The Settlement is a self-contained community which includes a care home, grocery store, gas station, airport, motor pool, carpenter shop, landfill, State library, U.S. Post Office and over 150 homes and buildings, many on the historic building registry.
NOTE: Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits afforded to an employee in a permanent position with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

- Duties Summary
Perform various housekeeping and personal care services to families or the elderly to assist in improving and/or maintaining an independent life style as a primary assignment. Housekeeping and personal care services include cooking, housecleaning, laundering, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, budgeting, feeding and bathing children or elderly clients, running errands or transporting clients to banks, stores, schools, etc. Teach clients by demonstration, example and/or instruction in the various housekeeping and personal care services provided. Observe relationships, unusual incidents, behavior or changes in health, situations and needs of the clients and report to the supervisor and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
General Experience: Experience requiring the ability to read, comprehend and write English. This requirement may also be met by possession of a high school diploma.
Specialized Experience: Three (3) years of work experience which demonstrated the ability to manage a household and provide care services to families, or the elderly. Examples of acceptable work experience include: a. homemaker and parent; and b. chore services worker involved with providing housekeeping and child or personal care services to families or the elderly. The experience may be met from part-time and/or unpaid work. There must, however, be evidence that participation was on a continuous basis but not necessarily on a full-time normal work basis.
Knowledge of: General housekeeping methods, supplies, and equipment; household cooking; use and care of household and kitchen appliances and equipment; personal hygiene; first aid and safety practices in the home; and methods of providing care for others.
Ability to: Provide personal care services to others; maintain a home in a neat and orderly condition; follow oral and written instructions; and make simple arithmetic computations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
