Recruitment Number 218345 - Temporary Part-Time, Waipahu to Aiea, Island of Oahu Employment Only - $23.53 / hr to $28.66 / hr  (SR-20, Step C to H).

Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

NOTE:  Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits afforded to an employee in a permanent position with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

Duties Summary

Microbiologists supervise and/or perform professional scientific work in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and control of microorganisms. At the III level, he/she independently performs the full range of microbiological work in one or more areas. The position may also be assigned to research and investigational projects to carry out major segments under the guidance of a microbiologist in overall charge, or may direct and oversee the work of lower level professional or technical personnel and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Basic Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, bacteriology,  or biology.  Coursework must have included subjects such as: 

a. Bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, molecular biology or virology;
b. Food, dairy, soil, industrial, public health, agriculture or applied bacteriology or microbiology;
c. Genetics, physiology, metabolism, epidemiology, animal or plant physiology or pathology.

All of the above coursework must be closely related to the study of microorganisms; AND must include physical and mathematical sciences which include coursework such as inorganic, qualitative, quantitative and organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, college algebra, or statistics.

Note: To be creditable, the focus and content of the course must have been substantively devoted to the required subject area.

Specialized Experience: One year of professional experience in the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and/or control of microorganisms. Such experience may have been gained in such scientific disciplines as bacteriology, immunology serology, mycology, parasitology, virology or other related areas of science.
