 Summary of Duties:
The Juvenile Client & Family Services branch supervises and monitors juvenile offenders placed on probation, protective supervision, or other court status.  The branch also assists the court in making decisions in the areas of guardianship and child custody, and administers the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, and the Kids First Program; and handles all adoption investigations and search processes.

This position is responsible for the functional and procedural operations of the branch within the administrative policies established by the Chief Judge of the Fifth Circuit.
 Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Applicants must meet the requirements specified in A, B, C, D, E, F or G below:

A. Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in a social science plus four and one-half (4½) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience, of which one (1) year must have been equivalent to Level V and two (2) years equivalent to Level III in the specialty field applying for (general or corrections).

B. Bachelor's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work plus four (4) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience, of which one (1) year must be equivalent to Level V and two (2) years equivalent to Level III in the specialty field applying for (general or corrections).

C. Bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from an accredited university plus four (4) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience, of which one (1) year must be equivalent to Level V and two (2) years equivalent to Level III. Emphasis in the major field of study must have included courses in abnormal psychology, counseling, probation, parole and correctional administration.

D. Master's degree in social work from an accredited school of social work plus three (3) years of responsible professional social work experience in the specialty field applying for (general or corrections), of which one (1) year must have been equivalent to Level V and two (2) years equivalent to Level III.

E. Master's degree in criminal justice administration from an accredited university which included courses in abnormal psychology, counseling, probation, parole and correctional administration, plus three (3) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience in the corrections welfare setting, of which one (1) year must have been equivalent to Level V and two (2) years equivalent to Level III.

F. Ph.D. degree in social work from an accredited school of social work with emphasis in the specialty field applying for (general or corrections) plus two (2) years of professional social work experience in the specialty field applying for (general or corrections), of which one (1) year must have been equivalent to Level V and one (1) year equivalent to Level III.

G. Ph.D. degree in criminal justice administration from an accredited university, which included courses in abnormal psychology, counseling, probation, parole and correctional administration, plus two (2) years of professional social work experience in the corrections welfare setting, of which one (1) year must have been equivalent to Level V and one (1) year equivalent to Level III.

Social Worker Levels
Social Worker III positions provide direct casework and related services for the full range of cases coming within the scope of a department's social work program; make independent analysis of client's situation; make reasoned conclusion as to preferred course of action and provide necessary services and treatment; prepare case records and reports; and perform other duties as required.

Social Worker IV positions provide intensive social case work and related services in the most complex cases presenting a wide range of psycho-social problems, and may concurrently supervise a small group of less experienced social workers; may provide services for the full range of cases coming within the scope of a department's programs at a field location alone, and perform other duties as required. Within a line service unit, may provide technical consultation on the case direction of a specific program area; and perform other duties as required.

Social Worker V positions plan, organize, coordinate and manage the social work services of an operational unit or direct a social work program of limited scope and complexity; and perform other duties as required.

Selective Certification Requirement - Driver's License: This position requires a current and valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.  

Non-Qualifying Experience: The following types of experience are not considered qualifying social work experience:
(1) Experience providing supportive services to professional social workers, vocational rehabilitation specialists, public housing managers, or other professional workers in such programs as public welfare, family court, etc.;
(2) experience determining the eligibility of applicants/recipients for benefits under a public welfare program such as medical assistance, food stamps and other benefits;
(3) experience providing vocational, educational, psychological, or pastoral counseling;
(4) experience providing occupational or physical therapeutic services;
(5) Peace Corps or VISTA work experience which did not require the application of professional knowledge of the principles and practices of social work and/or was not performed under competent professional supervision;
(6) experience relocating clients who are displaced as a result of urban renewal or other similar reasons; and,
(7) trainee level type social work experience will not be considered qualifying unless work is performed under competent professional social work supervision.
