Position Overview

This group of most senior technicians are recognized within the broader staff for their deep level of expertise within one or more technologies. These individuals help to define the principles, standards and guidelines regarding the proper use and deployment of business applications, data and technology within the company. These individuals are informal leaders in the organization and as such require many of the “soft skills” found (in addition to their technical knowledge) in the Management job family. This family is highly leveraged across the company.

The position will report to the Vertical Portfolio leader and provide technical consulting, review, and alignment across the business facing (employee and guest) solutions.

This position is responsible to perform architecture and design reviews with architecture and technical leads from each the IT Vertical Portfolios (Customer Experience, Commercial, Airline Operations, and Corporate Systems).

  • Identify potential process redesign and implications associated with designs
  • Leads critical vendor relationships in support of systems and architecture
  • Define project objectives for systems and technical infrastructure implementation consistent with strategic direction
  • Identify and develop operational plans across technologies and/or across systems
  • Ensure that the right people from across the enterprise participate in technical design and vendor selection for projects
  • Ensure appropriate use of project management methodology across all areas of responsibility
  • Develop or approve detail program specifications
  • For technical leads, contribute to technical design, decision-making, and tactical planning at the enterprise level
  • Provide leadership at an enterprise level in the analysis, planning, design and development of computer/network systems
  • Ensure that the testing strategies and capabilities are applied to the current technical activities and environments
  • Work with Testing and QA teams to improve testing strategies and procedures for Company
  • Work with support/application teams to ensure business needs are met
  • Anticipate and communicate environment impacts
  • Effective follow-up and communication of problems as they occur
  • Works to improve production support tasks and capabilities to increase effectiveness of this function across the Enterprise
  • Assist leadership in the financial control and accountability on capital and operating expenses for targeted areas of responsibility
  • Suggests improvements to IT Leadership on ways to increase financial accountability and visibility
  • Where applicable, ensures that their teams are financially sound and working to achieve the financial goals of the Company


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of professional work experience and education
  • 10 years of work experience within the Information Technology discipline
  • Ability to work directly with Executive Leadership across both Business and IT Teams to help Leadership negotiate the balance between business needs and the technical capabilities of the company
  • Able to represent the company’s Leadership position on technical choices and direction to both internal and external audiences
  • Create and model repeatable processes for others to follow
  • Looks to see if solutions to a similar problem outside of their enterprise already exist
  • Surrounds themselves with the right personnel, and able to create “buy-in” from other employees
  • Establishes organizational standards and norms across the enterprise that are easily repeatable
  • Participates in Architecture Review Meetings/ Boards to ensure that the organization and architecture align with enterprise business model
  • Ensures chosen technology is updated or replaced as needed
  • Understands and balances the complete lifecycle of technical choices
  • Assists in projects on an as-needed basis, particularly in the design process
  • Leads and facilitates the design and implementation of technical solutions and processes
  • Stays abreast of industry and emerging technologies to provide recommendations to the Architecture group and the Principals
  • Drives and fosters integration and communication across technology groups and projects, helps create a sense of “architecture community” by promoting positive development of technical job families
  • Participates in checkpoint and design reviews
  • Creates and maintains current state of architecture in his/her area
  • Expert knowledge of computer or network systems hardware and software theory, practice, concepts and technology
  • Sufficient business knowledge to assess impact of applied technology on customer’s business processes
  • Advanced knowledge of project management methodology
  • Excellent partnering, negotiation and communication skills
  • Can consult across multiple technology areas, to perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and solution implementation
  • Ability to lead technical direction at the enterprise level and across multiple projects or technology areas
  • Provides expert-level knowledge and experience to technology/project development reviews
  • Ability to lead and mentor the technical work of less senior staff
  • Ability to lead effectively in a fast-paced, team-based, customer- service-oriented environment
  • Ability to think strategically and construct the IT strategies for the Company
  • Understand the broader implications of situations; identify potential problem areas and execute solutions before they become problems
  • Leads IT teams in the development of problem solving frameworks and techniques to improve problem-solving capabilities
  • Understands the following:
    • impact of design decision to the computer (performance, etc.)
    • technical behavior of the underlying operating system
    • technical behavior of the compiler and tools.
    • ALL functional aspects of the tools and development environment
    • functional and technical behavior of the middleware and data layers
    • Dev/Ops, deployment environments
    • packaging and distribution of the application
    • operations/run requirements
  • Promotes adherence to standards and the common way (Software Development Life Cycle)
  • Leads/Conducts detailed code-reviews in a constructive manner
  • Ensures that coding solution is flexible, supportable, and requires minimal maintenance
  • Writes code that is harder, more advanced (queuing, threading, etc.) than Software Engineers
  • Suggests improvements to existing systems that would minimize maintenance costs
  • Is proficient in the required technology (OS390, COBOL, UNIX, C, C++, Java, etc.
  • Lead solutioning/design sessions with a program perspective in association with all interdependent systems
  • Technical Expert of required programming languages
  • Expert of technical/business environments
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Determine causes of errors and deciding what to do about it
  • Understand the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making
  • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one
  • Determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes
  • Identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system
  • Manage resolution of problems and escalate as required
  • Work across projects to synchronize data analysis efforts and deliverables
  • Negotiate and manage team relationships at project level
  • Analyze and resolve complex or multiple problems
  • Research and recommend alternative actions for problem resolution
  • Employ productivity aids in all aspects of assignments
  • Facilitate or complete analysis, design and programming of viable solutions to high complexity business problems according to user specifications
  • Develop or approve detail program specifications.
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies and influence technical designs
  • Comply with project management methodology requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.B.A./M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems and/or equivalent formal training or work experience
  • Publicly recognized by IT communities as an expert in more than one technology area
  • Sought after for their technical opinions and positions by multiple industry sources
  • Provides confident leadership through the most complex business and technical issues facing the company and does so with awareness and balance of the company’s position within its industry and overall marketplace
  • Recommends improvement within and across Director departments
  • Recognizes and communicates patentable ideas
  • Is accountable for successful development, deployment and run of solutions in his/her area
  • Ability to lead projects using the organization’s project management methodology
  • Actively participates and contributes to future Infrastructure Releases and Middleware/Hub
