Punahou Dance School is one of Hawai`i's largest dance academies for grades K-12, offering a variety of classes from introductory to advanced levels, all open to the public. The Dance School features after school classes in Ballet, Jazz, Street Dance, Musical Theatre and Tap, three state-of-the-art dance studios, and an outstanding dance faculty. The program fulfills a significant part of Punahou’s mission, fostering discipline, perseverance and creativity, while developing a foundation that helps students reach their full potential in the performing arts. 

The Dance School is actively seeking Substitute Dance Teachers who have knowledge of basic technique and current styles in any of the following dance forms: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop or Musical Theatre. An appropriate candidate is committed to excellence in teaching, and has the ability to motivate and inspire students in dance.

As a member of the Dance Faculty, a Substitute Dance Teacher will:

  • Instruct group lessons in dance to students in Grades K-12
  • Supervise and escort young students (Gr K-3) from designated pickup areas to the Dance Pavilion, as needed
  • Plan classes with level-appropriate warm-ups, across-the-floor skills and choreography
  • Teach, clean and rehearse choreography
  • Select and edit appropriate music for school settings
  • Assess, coach and encourage students as a group and on an individual basis
  • Adapt teaching methods to the needs of the class and individuals
  • Teach with the use of technology when appropriate 
  • Collaborate with Dance Director and fellow teachers on methodology, artistic elements of shows, and student assessment
  • Prepare students for end of year performances as needed
  • Attend stage rehearsals and shows for end of year performances as needed
  • Attend Dance Faculty meetings as needed
  • Support dance activities across campus as needed (such as Dance Team, Tap Company, in-school PE or Theatre Dept productions)

Status: Casual
FLSA: Exempt
Work year: 12 Months
Work hours: Designated hours between Mon–Fri, 2:15–7:00 pm; Sat 8:30-1:45 pm, or evenings as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience in dance performance or instruction
  • Professional dance performance experience
  • Three (3) years successful experience teaching dance
  • An enthusiasm and passion for dance, and an ability to inspire students’ lifelong love and learning of dance
  • A willingness to collaborate and learn together with teaching colleagues
  • A commitment to continual professional development
  • Highly effective communication skills, both interpersonal and written
